Choose the layer before the material
An overgrip is an outer layer over a sound base grip. A replacement grip replaces the base. Decide which you need before peeling anything off: a fresh outer surface cannot repair a damaged handle or a worn base.
- Synthetic overgrip
- Consider the surface feel and the thickness it adds to your existing handle. Check the packet rather than assuming every product has the same backing or adhesive.
- Towel grip
- A different surface to try if you prefer its absorbent feel. Fitting and drying instructions depend on the product. Do not assume it should be washed while fitted to a wooden handle.
- Replacement grip
- Choose when the base layer itself needs replacing or you are deliberately changing the handle setup. It is not interchangeable with every thin overgrip.
Compare fit, not universal size rules
There is no one handle thickness that suits every player. Ask a shop to let you compare the feel of different setups. Can you comfortably change your hand position without the wrap shifting or needing to clench? A useful comparison is between two known setups, not an unsupported promise that thicker means more stability or thinner means more power.
Change one thing at a time and keep the packet or product name. That makes it easier to explain what felt different when you next buy a grip. This is a buying conversation, not a hands-on product test or brand ranking.
Take these questions to the counter
- Am I replacing an outer wrap or the base layer?
- How much thickness will this add to my existing handle?
- Which side and end go where, and what finishing tape is supplied?
- What drying and care instructions does this exact product provide?
- Can someone demonstrate the fit before I buy several packs?

Choose your next step
Fitting, replacing and caring for a wrap covers preparation, overlap, finishing and signs of wear. We keep those instructions in one place rather than repeat them here.
Holding the racket correctly is about your hand position and changing grips during play—not the wrapping material.
For photographic fitting instructions, see the iFixit badminton grip replacement guide. Follow your product’s own instructions where they differ.
